R. Shanmugharaj was born as the youngest son of Sri. P.V Ramaswamy Chettiar and Smt. Veerammal in the weaving village of Kuthampully, where skilled fingers create wonders with threads, and he grew up surrounded by the rich weaving heritage of handloom Village.
Barely out of his teens, Shanmugharaj began his working life at Sree Muruga Finance, the family's venture in Kuthampully. What he brought to it was far more than a helping hand. Over the next twelve years, his dedication, discipline, and steady judgment quietly shaped it into a financial institution the community trusted and respected. It was a reputation earned one honest dealing at a time.
Before sunrise, he was already at the loom. The rest of the day went in getting the garments to shops across town and finishing the collections for Sri Muruga Finance. Twelve years passed this way and Kuthampully knew him as the man who was always on the move.
Drawn back to his family's roots, Sri. R.Shanmugharaj took his place beside his father, learning the textile trade on the journeys they made together to Ponnani, Malappuram, and Kozhikode. Their early success came through the "Thattam", the traditional headscarf, which won deep affection and trust among the community.
These were the years a trader slowly became a brand builder. He was part of busy textile businesses dealing in fabrics of every kind — and every sale taught him a little more about what people really wanted. The Thattam stayed as loved as ever, and alongside it came Dhotis, Set Sarees, Set Mundu, and Dhavanis. Thirty years of that, and without anyone quite noticing, the foundation of a global brand had been laid.
In these five years, vision quietly turned into reality. R.Shanmugaraj travelled across the region, sitting with weavers, understanding their craft, and bringing the best of them into his fold. State-of-the-art production units came up across the textile heartlands, and a dedicated production unit, warehouse and corporate office rose in his native Kuthampully. The era also brought a proud moment, as his son, Shri. Prathap Kumar, joined the business, bringing modern management to walk alongside traditional wisdom.
On June 8, 2025, five decades of hard work and quiet dreams blossomed into the grand launch of the Raajaram Dhotis, Shirts & Sarees. What began with a single product has today grown into a complete lifestyle brand, carrying the warmth of Kuthampully's looms to the world.
Under the leadership of Mr. R. Shanmugaraj, Raajaram now offers an extensive portfolio including Premium Dhotis, Set Saree, Set Mundu, Shirts, Dhavanis, Kids wear, Dhoti Belts, and Luxury Bed Sheet etc. Today, Raajaram serves a discerning clientele across India and international markets, continuing to rewrite the history of the textile industry through quality and innovation.
